jushiro_ukitake-205x300 Jushiro Ukitake is the captain of the 13th Division and, along with close friend Shunsui Kyoraku, is one of Captain Yamamoto’s first students at the Shinigami Academy. He is the eldest son of Ukitake family, one of the lesser noble houses in Soul Society. Ukitake’s white hair and weakly appearance are caused by his tuberculosis. Because of his jushiroukitake disease, Ukitake usually needs to rely on his Lieutenant to conduct his duties in his place. This role was filled by Kaien Shiba, brother of Kukaku and Ganju Shiba, until his tragic death. Kaien’s role is currently filled by Ukitake’s subordinates, Kiyone Kotetsu and Sentaro Kotsubaki, though the results of their work are more comedic than helpful. Despite his illness, Ukitake is by no means a weakling in combat; He is still considered on the strongest of the captains, though his endurance has been very much limited.

ukitake_shikai Ukitake’s Zanpakuto is named Sogyo no Kotowari (Truth of Pisces); its Shikai command is”All waves, rise now and become my shield; lightning, strike now and become my blade.” Once activated, Ukitake’s Zanpakuto splits into two blades connected by a rope adorned with various charms, the blades feature reversed prongs on their dull sides. Along with Shunsui Kyoraku, Jushito Ukitake is the only other captain to have a duel-wielding Zanpakuto.
