Yasutora Sado, better known as Chad, is one of Ichigo’s friends at school. He is half-Japanese and half-Mexican, and is by far one of the largest students in the school. Despite his imposing appearance, Chad refuses to fight unless it is for the sake of another. He does not have awareness of ghosts at first, but this changes when he witnesses a group of children being attacked by a Hollow. He discovers a unique ability that strengthens and armors one of his arms, enabling him to fight Hollows.
During his early years, Chad was extremely violent. Exploiting his advantage in size, he intimidated and hit any children who annoyed him. His grandfather, Oscar Joaquin, was an important role model for Chad and taught him not to threaten those smaller than himself just because he is stronger. Chad made a vow that he would never fight unless it was to protect others, even if his own life was in danger. Chad befriended many years later when some thugs took advantage of Chad‘s refusal to fight by ganging up on him. Ichigo saved Chad that day and made a pact with him that they would fight for each other, because Chad wouldn’t fight to protect himself.

Chad has accompanied Ichigo both to the Soul Society (where he squared off against Shunsui Kyoraku, and survived, even though Kyoraku easily defeated him) and Hueco Mundo (where Chad discoved Brazo Izquierda del Diablo, and defeated a privaron espada, Gammalbein [sp?]). Chad went up against the fifth espada (Nnoitra), and almost died.

Also, Chad was one of ryoka that Ukitake said could wind up being a shinigami in the future.
