Uryuu Ishida is one of the last members of the Quincy, once a powerful group of Hollow hunting humans, left in the world. Even though his father has abandoned the Quincy ways, Uryuu continued to learn about his Quincy powers from his grandfather. Because of his heritage, Uryuu was well aware of Ichigo’s Soul Reaper powers before anyone else did. But he bears a deep grudge against all Soul Reapers, including Ichigo, but comes to view Ichigo differently over time, eventually becoming an ally and friendly rival.
After Ichigo Kurosaki gains the Soul Reaper powers of Rukia Kuchiki, Uryuu confronts him in an attempt to prove that Quincy are superior. Using some special bait, Uryu attracts a swarm of Hollows to Karakura Town so that he and Ichigo can compete to see who can kill the most Hollows in a day. This bait, however, attracts too many Hollows, including a menos grande, and Uryu and Ichigo are forced to band together.

Just like Ichigo has lost his shinigami powers and was able to regain them, Uryu Ishida lost his Quincy powers after his epic fight against Captain Mayuri of Squad 12, but was able to regain them through his father Ryuken’s assistance in the very early stages of the Hueco Mundo arc. Uryu also discovered the highly useful and deadly seele schneider in his father’s hospital and used it in Hueco Mundo against Cirucci Thunderwitch.
