Tosen was formerly the Captain of the 9th Division. He, like Sajin, is one of the more peaceful Soul Reapers in the Gotei
13. He is dark skinned with dark hair, and has been blind since birth. Before his defection from the Soul Society, he was often seen with his old friend, and captain of the 7th Division, Sajin Komamura.
He claims to have left the Soul Society with Aizen because he feels that it is the path resulting in the least bloodshed, and therefore the path of justice. He started this quest for “The path of justice,” when a women with the same philosophy, who was very dear to him died because an argument with her husband. Tosen retrieved her Zanpakutou and vowed to protect justice from their on.
Just before becoming a shinigami, Tosen became friends with Sajin Komamura. They were a perfect pair, as they both sought peace, and Tosen couldn’t judge Sajin’s appearance since he is blind. Sajin was one of the most hurt by Tosen’s betrayal with Aizen, along with his Lieutenant Shuhei Hisagi, whom he also seemed to have a close relationship with.
Tosen despises those who seek violence, including Kenpachi Zarachi and the 6th Espada, Grimmjow Jeagerjaqaes. In 
the arrancar, Tosen has changed his clothing to white garbs, and an orange scarf. One person he has taken a liking to is Wonderweiss Margera, because like him, he is a “pure spirit.”
Tosen’s Zanpakutou is called Suzumushi (Cricket) and in its Shikai state when Tosen commands “Cry” it releases a loud high-pitched tone of a large area and knocks anyone that hears it unconscious. It can also, at the command “Smash his Limbs,” change form and rain hundreds of blades down on Tosen’s opponent. In its Bankai 
state, Enma Korogi (Devil Cricket), Suzumushi creates a gigantic black dome around Tosen and his opponent, anchored with large rings, that causes the opponent to lose all senses but touch. Tosen can still wield the sword form of his Zanpakutou while his Bankai is released, and anyone that touches the hilt of the sword is immune to the dome’s effects.
