General Yamamoto is the elderly general of the Gotei 13. He is the commander of the First Division but also has superiority over all the other Captains. Allow he may look like a frail man, Yamamoto remains without question one of the strongest Shinigamis in
Soul Society. His body is very muscular despite his old age and is covered with various scars obtained from countless battles in his past.

Yamamoto founded the Shinigami Academy some 2000 years prior to the beginning of the events in Bleach. He himself was an instructor who has taught many of the Captains such as Shunsui Kyoraku and Jushiro Ukitake. Although he is not one to speak excessively, Yamamoto does have a fierce temper and will not tolerate anyone who breaks the laws of Soul Society.

Yamamoto’s Zanpakuto is called Ryujin Jakka and, in its sealed form, only resembles an old women staff. In reality, it is one of the most powerful fire-based Zanpautos in existence. The Shikai command is “reduce the whole of creation to ashes” after which the surrounding area around the Zanpakuto is consumed in flames. Yamamoto can direct the flames by swinging his sword, the fire is hot enough to disintegrate anyone or anything unless it possesses a high enough spiritual power to resist it.
