Ichigo Kurosaki, 15 years old high school student, has the ability to see ghosts. On the way back from school, he beats up some punks who vandalized a tribute of flowers to a girl who recently died at the street corner. Afterwards, the ghost of the girl thanks Ichigo for his help. Ichigo returns home and gets into a scuffle with his dad, Isshin, over his curfew. He goes to his room without having dinner with his two sisters Yuzu and Karin. The next day as Ichigo walks to school, a huge explosion causes everyone to flee. Ichigo sees that the girl ghost he had helped yesterday is being pursued by a large monster, a Hollow. A girl dressed in black robes suddenly appears and slays the Hollow with a sword, then disappears as fast as she appeared. Puzzled by the events of the day, Ichigo returns home that night and ponders in his room. The girl in black from before walks out from the wall, ignoring Ichigo. After getting her attention, she identifies herself as Rukia Kuchiki, a Shinigami (Death god). She restrains Ichigo using Shinigami magic because he is uncooperative and explains to him about spirits, Hollows and Soul Society. Ichigo’s sister, Yuzu, shows up injured at his doorstep and warns that something is attacking them. Ichigo rushes downstairs to see a large hole in the wall of the house and a Hollow holding Karin outside. He forcibly breaks the spell binding him and attacks the monster. Thanks to Rukia, they are able to free Karin. Ichigo discovers he was the one being targeted all along. His usually large spiritual power passed on the ghost girl when they contacted each other, the Hollows had been hunting her previously until they picked up on Ichigo’s scent. Rukia has to sacrifice herself to protect Ichigo and becomes too injured to fight. She offers Ichigo the choice to become a Shinigami and he agrees. After piercing his chest with the zanpaktou (Shinigami’s sword), Ichigo transforms into a Shingami and defeats the Hollow.
