Rukia tries to hold Renji back to give Ichigo a chance to run away, but Ichigo suddenly surges with spiritual power and overwhelms Renji. But just when he is about to finish Renji off, Byakuya Kuchiki steps in and defeats Ichigo effortlessly. Rukia begs him to not finish Ichigo off in exchange for returning to Soul Society without resistance. Ichigo is stripped off his powers and left dying, but is rescued by Kisuke Urahara, who also treats Ishida on the scene. After awakening in his shop, Ichigo is told that Rukia faces the death penalty in Soul Society, but there is a way for Ichigo to save her. First, however, Ichigo must train to regain his powers.
