Using all his spiritual strength, Don Kanonji creates a tiny energy ball (the Kanon Ball) which he uses to blast Ichigo’s zanpakuto out from the ceiling where it was wedged in. Ichigo is able to fight the Hollow now, but his aim is still off because his hands are stuck together. He wounds the Hollow in the shoulder and it carries them to the roof where Ichigo actually has the advantage because he can now swing his zanpakuto freely. Kanonji also manages to scramble up to the roof, and Ichigo again has to protect him from the Hollow. When Ichigo finally defeats the Hollow, Kanonji sees it revert to the spirit he thought he had sent to heaven and realizes the error of his actions. He thanks Ichigo for helping him, then shakes his hand while calling him his new pupil – something Ichigo sees as a demotion.
