Rukia vists Urahara to gather more information on the Quincy. Urahara explains that the Quincy have not been around for nearly 200 years because nearly their entire clan was wiped out. The Quincy were humans who had the ability to detect Hollows and developed powers to fight them. But unlike Shinigami who purify Hollows with their zanpakutos to send their souls to Soul Society, the Quincy killed the Hollows out of revenge for the human souls they’ve consumed. It is this faith that led to their destruction.

Ichigo is provoked by Ishida into his challenge; He uses Kyon to change into his Shinigami form. Ishida brings out a small capsule which he calls a Hollow bait. When curshed it will attract many Hollows to the town. The one to kill the most in 24 hours is the winner.
