Bleach Manga Chapter 23: 6/17 op.7 “Sharp Intent, Dull Blade”

The Grand Fisher tells Ichigo that he was able to read into his memories when he sank his talons into him earlier. Using those memories, he was able to create Ichigo’s mother’s face and even simulate her voice. Using this technique, the Grand Fisher has been able to defeat many other Shinigami by creating the form if the one person in their lives that they cannot bring themselves to attack.

Back at the small shrine where Yuzu and Karin are resting, Kon asks Rukia to go and save Ichigo. Rukia is hesitant but rushes back to check on how Ichigo’s battle is going. She wants to help but knows that this is not a battle to protect life but a battle to protect pride for Ichigo. Ichigo must win this fight on his own if he is to move on from the memories of his past.

Ichigo is frozen and cannot bare to lift his sword against the form of his mother.
The Grand Fisher takes advantage of this weakness and impales Ichigo by thrusting his claws through his own bait. But Ichigo planned on getting hit in order to stop Grand Fisher from getting away. He grips the Hollow’s claws and thrusts his Zanpakuto into its body, cutting out a large gash.
