Shinji Hirako is the former captain of the 5th division in the Gotei 13, and the unofficial leader of the Vaizards. He has chin lengthed blonde hair, and sharp facial features. After becoming a vaizard, Shinji wears a brown suit, a black shirt, and tie. He generally adds comic relief to the series, either from receiving physical beatings by Ichigo or Hiyori, or from his love interest in Orihime.

100 years before the current events in the series, Shinji was the Captain of the 5th division. His leiutenant was Sousuke Aizen. He never fully trusted Aizen, but assumed he had him in check. After a meeting of the captains, discussing the mysterious dissapearance of shinigami, Shinji is one of the ones sent to rescue the 9th division. He, along with the other current vaizards were ambushed by the treacherous Aizen, Gin, and Tousen, resulting in their hollowfication. They were thereby banished from Soul Society as traitors, only to be saved by Urahara and Yoruichi and forced to live in the human world. There he and the rest of the vaizards train their shinigami and hollow powers, even recruiting Ichigo as one of their own.

Not much has been revealed about Shinji’s zanpakuto. Both his shikai and bankai remain a mystery, but seeing as how he was a captain, he has definitely achieved a bankai. His Hollow mask resembles that of a pharaoh’s mask, and in addition to the normal enhancements of a hollow mask, Shinji can also create ceros.
