Yama is dead, because he just took an attack that could rip the world in half. He was already dead even before he cast the Kidou spell and he knew it. Also, what makes you think that Aizen is that much smarter than Yamamoto? The fact that he's been in charge of the Gotei 13 for over 1000 years means that he's not just the strongest, but also a very smart and gifted leader; he also created the shinigami academy. Running an organization of that size is no easy task. If he was just stronger than his subordinates, then they would've ganged up on him and killed him a long time ago. Well, how should I say this..
