Renji is a Hollow?
I have an INSANE theory I want to share with you guys… I think Renji is a natural visored who hasn’t awakened his hollow powers but might be on the verge or doing so. Let’s look at some proof…
His fighting style: Renji has an interesting fighting style when compared to a hollow. His signature Kido spell Hado 31: Shot of Red Fire is remarkably similar to a Cero attack. He also has a high level of durability, strength, speed, and spiritual pressure. These aren’t entirely remakrable to me except for the Red Fire, so next…
His Zanpaktou: Zabimaru is one of the few split personality Zanpaktou (The others are the dual-weilding Zanpaktou users and Ichigo). Joshiro Ukitake’s Zanpaktou doesn’t really resemble a hollow or point to him being a visored but Ichigo and Shunsui Kyoraku’s Zanpaktou denfinitely scream hollow… We see that Hollow Ichigo is a part of Zangetsu, and as Ichigo starts to get dominated by his hollow side, Hollow Ichigo eliminates Zangetsu. Similarily, I think the Baboon and the Snake that make up Zabimaru are competing for domination of Renji, but somehow they have come to a balance. Given that the snake is the more violent of the two, I would equate him to hollow Ichigo, and say that the Baboon is the original Zanpaktou personality. As I said I don’t think that Renji is a full visored or knows what is occuring, and just thinks his Zanpaktou is normal.
His Bankai: I find his bankai fairly interesting. It has several hollow themes built into it. 1. Bones: bones/exoskeletons are common themes among hollows, Renji’s Bankai seems to closely resemble hollows in this respect, and is almost identical to a hollow Kenpachi Zaraki fought in a flashback. 2. Cero: Similar to Hado 31, Baboon Bone Cannon closely resembles a Cero, and is even shot from Zabimaru’s mouth. 3. Instant regeneration like most hollows, Zabimaru has the ability to regenerate quickly if it’s damaged 4. Hollow mask: a common theme among Arrancar/Visoreds/Hollows, Renji has a similar mask on his Bankai uniform, said to be the skull of a Baboon.
Uruhara: Renji has a strange connection to Uruhara, and it was a conversation they had that sparked the idea for this post after I noticed that about two hundred chapters before Shinji used his Shikai, he showed the ability to write backwards. Renji stayed with Uruhara during the Arrancar introduction arc, and made a deal with Uruhara that if Renji trained Chad, Uruhara would “answer the questions he had.” One of the things Uruhara seems to specialize in is hollowification, so if Renji were to seek Uruhara out specifically, this seems like the subject he would ask about.
Well that’s all the proof I have right now, pictures will come later, but right now I have to go do chores for my mother.

Renji’s bankai is, thinking back, the only one that looks like a creature. Renji first ‘meets’ Urahara late on in the story, so he probably didnt know who he really was until then. Taking in the pendulum arch he was probably just a little punk a kid, or not even there at all. So no way he encounterd Urahara then. After that his growth is normal.
The only connection he is with someone who knows about hollowfication before Ichigo’s adventures started.. is Aizen. Renji greatly respected Aizen even after he transferd to Byakuya’s second in command. Regardless.. Renji’s Bankai is consistent with his Shikai.
Its a weak assumption to say that hadou 31 resembles a cero. Seeing how its a used a basic kidou technique in school. Also a hollowfication, like the ones we’ve seen on the vaizards, don’t seem to have a connection to users zanpaktou abilities. Ichigo is a special case since his hollow was ‘born’ naturally in comparison to the forcefully evolotion via the hougyoku.
All in all. I dont believe Renji is a natural Vaizard. He has no past-ties with Urahara and the only other man capable of hollowfication at that time would be Aizen. The last thing is that we have only seen a materilisation of Ichigo’s and Renji’s blade. I dont see any filler arch as a source for information so we can only speculate with the other zanpaktou’s truely look like. Hell the basic rules of a Shikai and bankai don’t seem to apply to everybody.

“Aizen”: I think Aizen was the one who created him, and he was a test slightly more succesful than the ones before him. I think it is unfair to say he was only a runt because Shinigami age weirdly, and he served under Aizen when Gin was still the leutenant. Which means he would have been slightly younger than his current self at the pendulum arc.
“hadou 31 resembles a cero.”: I think it’s just interesting that this he excells at, and his in comparison to the standard shinigami school hado 31 is bigger/more explosive but less controled.
“forcefully evolotion via the hougyoku”: You forget that the hougyoku didn’t create the visoreds, just allowed them to survive and mature. Renji could be in an unmature state specifically because he didn’t have access to the hougyoku (if Aizen created him).
That said, I prefaced this with saying it was crazy, just if it comes true, I called it…

anyways, good theory mart. it is plausible; i think the most convincing piece is “the question.”

@mart1: REnji’s Bankai is a direct ‘evolution’ of its shikai, basicly exactly like Byakuya’s. Its a bigger, better and more advanced.
I dont Renji ever exelled at any kind of kidou. Its seems it is the only one he has some control over.
@ssj: never knew that. Filler do tend to ‘lack’ storywise thou. At least they know themself that they are being completely random with it. The naruto filler blended in better, thou everytime a movie or filler is involved with naruto they seem intend on increasing his idiot factor by 200 percent.
I suppose Aizen could have used similar techniques on Renji as his experiments with the Vaizards. I may have been a bit too fast with my earlier rant:( . Aizen always saw Renji as ‘the one who could cause the most trouble out those three’(the others being Hinamori and Kira ofcourse).

“exactly like Byakuya’s”: But what is the point of this point? that is the nature of Bankai (that they surpass shikai). What Bankai is worse than it’s previous state? Ichigo’s definately falls under the better category of Bankai if it is not directly size wise bigger. Though others like Gin don’t have neccesarily bigger bankai and tend to focus more on speed.
