Shinigami
Shinigami or Soul Reapers are the samurai-like warriors of Soul Society who belong to a militaristic organization called Gotei 13. They are human souls who possess a high level of spiritual energy and are either recruited from the general population of Soul Society or enter the ranks because they come from a noble family. The standard Shinigami uniform is a black kimono (upper body) and hakama (lower body) along with a badge or label indicating which division they belong to. All Shinigami possess a zanpakuto (soul cutting sword”) which is the physically manifestation of their soul and generally takes the shape of a sword. The zanpakuto is the Shinigami’s primary weapon and its power can be increased if the Shinigami has learned to release its shikai (initial release) or even bankai (final release) states. Shinigami who have been trained at the academy also have knowledge of Kido, special incantations which cause spell-like effects. Other than keeping order in Soul Society, the Shinigami can travel to the human world. Their duties in the human world include performing soul burials on lost human souls so as to send them to Soul Society. Shinigami also are responsible for hunting down and cleansing Hollows which were once human souls that have been transformed into monsters.
